Thome reaches 600 homers
 Updated Aug 15, 2011 9:17 PM ET

Jim Thome hit two homers Monday night to become the eighth player in major league history to reach 600.

Thome hit his 600th home run, a three-run shot, in the seventh inning to give the Minnesota Twins a 9-5 lead.

Thome's first homer, his 10th of the season, was a two-run shot to left-center field off Detroit's Rick Porcello that gave the Twins a 5-3 lead. It went an estimated 412 feet. It came in his third plate appearance of the game. He lined out and singled earlier.

Seven major league players have hit 600 home runs. Alex Rodriguez was the most recent player to reach the milestone last August. Fighting injuries during a frustrating season for the Minnesota Twins, the 40-year-old Thome hasn't received nearly the amount of national publicity that his predecessors who reached the milestone did.

He seems like an all around good guy, a shoe in for the Hall of Fame. Congrats to Jim Thome. He's been a great asset to the Twins.

Now I think he will retire at the end of this season. He's had medical issues, a great season and now one for the record books. He made his mark and earned his trip to Cooperstown.
