I think today is Burt's day to get in.  He only missed it by a couple votes last year, so I will guess at 1pm that announcement will get him in cooperstown.   thumbsup

I agree.  This will be his year.  He may not have an overwhelming win-loss record, but he ranks 5th in career strikeouts and 9th in career shutouts.  Those last 2 stats should have put him in long ago, but unfortunately, the baseball writers that vote seem to have tunnel vision that looks for a 300 win career.  Blyleven is 13 wins short of that mark...Big deal.  Wins have as much to do about the team as it does the pitcher.  Strikeouts and shutouts are all pitcher.

If he missed out this year, I think he still has 1 more shot to get in.  Lets hope it doesn't come to that.

Wasn't he 5 votes short last year? I think he deserves it, but to sway those 5 or any extra votes his way would take some of those sports writers to change their minds.
Why do sports writers get to make this decision?? It should be players with some fan based decision involved 70% players 10% sports writers and 10% fans. How many sports writers faced him in the batters box?

I will say Roberto Alomar would take votes from him, but after spitting in that ump's face, he doesn't deserve to get in,

Hell we won't see another 200+ pitcher in this day and age with the way the game has changed ever....I say get him in now, don't make this drag out till the 15th chance.....

The National Baseball Hall of Fame is privately owned and not associated with MLB.  I think the original thought of veteran sportswriters doing the voting was to take bias out of the decision process.  Fans would be the worst voters.  Just look at what a joke All-Star voting is.  Nothing but a popularity contest.  It were up to fans, Blyleven would never get in as he was pretty unpopular outside of Minnesota.  He had quite the reputation of being a cry baby and a whiner.  I don't even think players would vote him in for similar reasons.  I also think current players would hold too much bias towards players that played on their team.  Look at some of the young punks in the game today.  They would probably vote everyone down because they think they are better.  The only thing I'd like to see would be to give current HOF members more of a say.  They went through the process and have an appreciation for what it takes to make it.

I disagree with that.  Yeah, he did something stupid.  But if you use that logic, Blyleven shouldn't be in either.  In 1980, he quit on the Pirates because he didn't like how the coach used him.  He then got traded to Cleveland and in one game, he got mad because he didn't like how the ump was calling balls and strikes.  So he decided he was just going to throw batting practice fastballs right down the middle of the plate until the manager pulled him.  Blyleven had earned the nickname "Cryleven" early in his career.  Heck, he has even been known to whine a bit too much each year they leave him out of the Hall.

Even though I think Blyleven was a big baby at times and even a poor sport, his accomplishments on the field deserve entry into the Hall.  Just as Alomar should be considered because of his accomplishments and not 1 bad decision.

I agree with Pete Rose as well.  Maybe the greatest hitter of all time and not in the Hall.  Ridiculous!  His gambling addiction had no impact on his performance on the field.  Obviously, it did have an impact on how he managed games, but I don't think anyone thinks he should be inducted because of his Managerial career.  Pete should be in the HOF.  The story of his accomplishments and his failures should be told as they are a large part of baseball history.  It just seems the Hall wants to hide it all and pretend he never happened.

Now the steroid users are another story.  You have to ask the question...would they have been great without the drugs?  I can't see Barry Bonds breaking any records without juicing up and its almost impossible to determine how great he would have been without them.

I made that comment due to similar reasons others haven't and/or won't get in, none of those were acting like a baby, hell if that was the case most hall of fames would be empty... laughing11
