Bert will probably say that you don't need a closer if the starters would all pitch complete games. laughing4 laughing4

Ya not good at all. I know some that will be happy and his antics on the mound, can be annoying, but he does get the job done for the most part.

Now what to do for a closer. Jon Rauch has closed b-4. Or do you go out and try to find one.

Despite all his nuances, he is still considered the 3rd best closer in baseball currently.
It will probably be a closer by committee, Matty G, Neshak, and Majares. icon_scratch icon_scratch dontknow dontknow

Yep, the report I heard said it is a severely torn ligament and surgery is likely.  That is a tough loss.  I am gonna miss watching the drama that Nathan brings to the team.  Who are they gonna find that can come in to the game with a 1 run lead, load the bases and somehow get the last out without giving up the run.  All while looking like he is going to have a nervous breakdown on the mound.

According to some sources this morning there is a 90% chance that Nathan is done for the season. crybaby2 crybaby2 cussing
Minnesota Twins All-Star closer Joe Nathan has a torn ligament in his throwing elbow.

General Manager Bill Smith says the plan is to rest Nathan for two weeks, eliminate the soreness and build strength in his elbow before making any decisions about surgery.

Nathan was 2-2 with a 2.10 ERA, and had a career-high 47 saves last year.

Nathan may get a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews, the surgeon who operated on his elbow last October to remove bone chips.

Nathan hurt his ulnar collateral ligament. Injuries to that ligament have led to season-ending Tommy John surgery in other pitchers.

Nathan said he'll try to come to a decision quickly.

"I'm going to do whatever I can right now to give myself the best chance to go out there and help this team out," Nathan said, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. "But at the same time, I'm not going let this go on too long because at the same time, I know these guys have a decision to make, and they've gotta prepare for the season, too, so I will make a decision quicker rather than later and give them ample time to do what they have to do."

Nathan flew back to Minneapolis Sunday after feeling soreness in the elbow in Saturday's game against Boston.

But here is the good news!!!

Left-hander Francisco Liriano, coming off a tough 2009 season, had an encouraging Grapefruit League debut. Over two innings, Liriano gave up one hit, walked one and struck out three. thumbsup thumbsup thumbsup

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Minnesota Twins closer Joe Nathan left Saturday's game with a right elbow problem before Tug Hulett's three-run homer helped a Boston Red Sox split squad to a 9-3 win.

Nathan, who had surgery on the elbow in October after finishing second in the majors with 47 saves, is to be re-evaluated Sunday. He was removed in the third inning for precautionary reasons when he felt soreness and tightness in the elbow after walking two of his three batters.

John Lackey pitched two perfect innings in his first appearance for Boston since leaving the Angels as a free agent. Minnesota went ahead 3-2 with two runs in the seventh before Hulett's homer off loser Jeff Manship made it 5-3 in the bottom of the seventh. Joe Nelson was the winner.
