Harmon Killebrew has been diagnosed with esophageal cancer, the Hall of Famer announced Thursday.

Killebrew, 74, released a statement through the Twins and the Hall of Fame saying he has begun treatment at the Mayo Clinic.

"While my condition is very serious, I have confidence in my doctors and the medical staff and I anticipate a full recovery," the statement read in part.

Killebrew had a 22-year major league career and played all but his final season with the same franchise. He broke in with the Washington Senators in 1954 as an 18-year-old and had established himself as a regular by the time the franchise moved to Minnesota for the 1961 season.

He led the American League in home runs six times and was named MVP in 1969. He played in all 162 games that year, hitting .276 with 49 homers, 140 RBI, 145 walks (to just 84 strikeouts), a .427 on-base percentage and a .584 slugging percentage.

Killebrew was released by the Twins after the 1974 season and played one final year for the Royals before retiring at age 39. He finished his career with 573 home runs and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1984

Esophageal Cancer is a horrible form of cancer. If it wasn't caught in time he has about 7-12 months left. If they caught it in time he has one hell of a fight in front of him. My Dad went through this when he was 74 as well. It's horrible and a damn hard fight. First thing is rip out the esophagus. Then slide the stomach up. Hope to hell it all goes fine. My Dad's stomach started dying as you go from four blood vessels on it down to one. So my Dad had to eat through tubes for a year. Then they took a piece of colon and made and esophagus out of it. His colon then exploded and we almost lost him for the fourth time in 18 months. He now has a colostomy and is living pretty good. He just turned 80.

When I asked the docs how long he would live after all this they said "If he makes 80 we would call the surgery a success". He shows no sign of going downhill now.

Thoughts go out to Harmon and his family as I know first hand how bad this can be.

Really sucks about Harmons cancer. I really hope it all goes well for him. Shane, it sounds like you have had some real experience with this type of cancer and you don't paint a pretty picture. Best luck to the him and his family in this hard time.
CT, I'm just messing with ya.   tongue1 tongue1

I would never wish cancer on anyone, but this type is horrible and has a low success rate.
