It was a tough first day. The windy areas seemed to have little movement if any. My cousins who were higher up on the bluffs and more sheltered had some movement. No legal deer.

Two drives produced 2 does for 11 guys.

The area we are in has a 4 points to one side in order to be a legal buck. That's left us with a huge number of smaller bucks. I saw 3 today.

Hoping day 2 brings better results.

I got the only one...then had to leave, because for some reason, my wife didn't have a key to the back door at 12:15 this morning and was locked out of the house....lucky for me, my daughter had picked her up from work and she ended up going to her house.

We hunt east of Hinckley on State Land. Didnt see a single deer all day saturday and all 4 of us sat in our stands from 1 hr before light til dark. Heard maybe 10 shots all day, Unreal.

Sunday we were again in our stands about an hour before we could shoot and didnt see anything all morning. About 9:30 I decided it was time to pack it in and started taking my steps out that I hang my pack and gun on and lowered down my pack. I decided to sit there for another 10 minutes before I got down, and about 2 mins later I heard some brush breaking behind me and a big doe and 2 yearlings came trotting in. I decided to take the big doe and thought I had clearance of the tree even though I knew it would be a tight shot. Well I shot the tree.. lol. Shot my gun later in the day and I was shooting an inch left at 75 yards... Well atleast I knew why I hit the tree . Just after I shot my grandpa seen 9 deer come bolting out of the same swamp mine came out of, but couldnt get a good shot at them so he passed on the shot. I guess a few guys had come down the trail and headed in to the swamp and spooked all the deer out.

Next weekend we will be in St.Croix State Park, we usually do well in there so hopefully we have better luck.

Seeing deer and having a shot is more than some get on opener.

I'm curious is St. Croix State Park considered public hunting land?

I had my shot for the season and got a horrible case of the buck fever shakes. Then it went horribly wrong. I missed the first shot. Broke its left front leg with the second shot. Then took 2 more rushed horrible shots as it was racing thru the dense brush on 3 legs. My 4th shot ended up taking down a small tree.

After nearly an hour search, we found nothing. My 3 legged doe got away.

Group ended the weekend with 5 for 11. All does. The rest of my group is going out next weekend. I will be dealing with wedding stuff for my sisters wedding.

Not really odd, persay...as I understand it deer can hear gunfire, but because its soo loud they cannot determine the direction it comes from or how close the shot was too them.

Deer do some strange things! Once my biggest buck came after I shot a doe,I never saw the buck with her,she was bout 60-70 yds out.I shot, she took off away from me. It was then I saw the buck runnin right at me! I could have bayoneted him! I shot at bout 5 yards he dropped right there a fine 12 pointer under 200 lbs but a nice symmetrical rack! The doe went bout 100 yds.I found her after I dressed the buck. Thats my whitetail story. The biggest mulie was in colo. 30 yds out a heart shot! I aimed, fired he fell>>>>>> Hit him right in the neck at the base of his skull,Earlier I shot at a doe 4 shots she stood there lookin at me bout 50 yds out all clean misses. Thats when I learned to sight the rifle in more often!!
