The discovery of an equipment theft is threatening the continuation of a remote white cedar plantation designed to improve deer habitat in northern St. Louis County.

A Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) wildlife employee reported the theft of solar panels, a wiring harness, and battery, used to create an electric barrier to deer and protect a northern white cedar planting experiment that began in 1997 as a partnership with the Minnesota Deer Hunter’s Association (MDHA). The equipment was valued at $1,000.

The theft occurred between Jan. 5-10. Photos taken at the scene indicate an individual parked a highway vehicle at the gate on the Bulldog-Hanson State Forest Road off the Townline State Forest Road, drove by ATV to the fenced area, and used a homemade apparatus to disarm it and gain access to the equipment.

“The seedlings are not a size where they will survive without continued protection, said Larry Petersen, International Falls area wildlife manager. “This is the second equipment theft at the location, and with a remote site, relatively easy access, and limited security options, it could continue. It’s too bad one individual has to ruin a project that involved the hard work of so many people – including the MDHA volunteers whose fundraising efforts provided $7,500 for the initial project costs.”

Northern white cedar is a preferred deer thermal cover species, that once harvested, has a low rate of regeneration due to germination failures, unsuitable microclimates for seedlings, and excessive animal herbivory (over-browsing by deer, snowshoe hares, mice, etc.). It was hoped that by prohibiting deer herbivory, the cedars could be regenerated and improve the winter habitat for the deer population and other wildlife. The initial total project cost of $13,422 was funded in partnership with the MDHA, with DNR wildlife staff providing ongoing maintenance

Now would anyone here install expensive equipment on a site where you go a few times a year and its out in the woods?? even on private property!!
Dont yah think a DNR employee could go out there biweekly and spray pepper capsaicin on the trees?? No extra cost the employee is gettin paid a hourly wage anyway.
I see these DNR guys all the time 3-4 standing around shootin the bull or sleeping.I woke them up more than a few times and they always say their assessing the Buckthorn same story many times and nothing has been done with the buckthorn for 12 years I been here!!
They are wanting more fees?? BULL Contract the work out to a private company that if your a employee and stand around every time your seen!!YOUR FIRED!!
Another one is putting docks in in the spring!! They put 2-3 docks a day.I KNOW I with the same 3 man crew could put every dock in the county in a day maby day and a half! the only time consuming thing is driving to the next lake! and anyone with 1/2 a brain could sit down look at a map and make a route to get em in quickly and efficently!!

THE DNR IS ALL CHIEFS NO workers it seems.Just killin time to get paid

Although it just about kill's me to agree with anything you two say, in this case I'm in complete agreement! There are no gray area's when it come's to private property! If it doesn't belong to you, then it must belong to someone else! So you do not touch it! Period! Maybe there is some part of the word NO that these rocket scientist's do not understand! I wonder if it's the N or the O! :cussing:DIRTBALL2 bs

There all kinda of personalities in this world and we all know there are thieves! Any of us would be hesitant of leaving some costly equipment out there unattended.NOT The DNR who could care less! the tax payers and license buyers will foot the bill.Second time its been stolen!! They dont learn? No its that they dont care! Too much work to put that 100 gal.sprayer on the back of one of their multiple 4 wheelers and do it manually! their just too lazy cause of their easy laid back job where they cover for each other.
Out this way I have on private property run across farmers electrifying equipment,Its always far off the road at their fence line holding the animals in.In a hard to reach area.
