I tagged first season shotgun and this weekend is the last weekend of second and last season here in Iowa. I went out pheasant hunting on some state ground last weekend that I have been hunting for 2 years. Didn't see one bird but kicked up a dozen deer off their beds in an hours time. I am debating on getting another tag to go out but the place is all just crp grass and ponds, has standing corn and beans in it. (not much but it is there) There isn't actually a spot real good to sit so my question is...

Would you walk it and try to kick them up or what would you do, I shoot a scoped 12 gauge and dont know about finding target, making sure shouldered properly and getting a good shot off without busting myself in the forehead with the scope...

any tips that might be useful are appreciated.

Id walk it and see what happens.  If you have access to an unscoped gun I think that would be better.

Good luck :)

I go along with that. They are probably bedded down daytime, thats why you jumped them.Find a high spot near food,I would also guess their nocturnal but you may get lucky some evening.I have watched them in those WMAs that are all natural grass. Its a tough decision where to sit,They seem to just meander with no real trails. If your going to jump shoot you may get a good shot after they jump and run sometimes they'll stop and look back to see what spooked them.Jump shootin just gives more chance of wounding and no recovery.Good luck

Ya might look for a rock pile, or some natural high spot to sit on.  It seems to me to be a hit or miss situation.  It's hard to tell if they are bedded down or not.  We have a field by us, and walking to our stands, there is always bed signs, but no deer.

Then yell stop and they will stop... actually any noise will make a running deer stop.  I've had running deer stop and look around after I shot at them

What you probably should have done is find a nice, comfy, cozy place to sit where you would be well concealed! Then make glenn57 run all over the field so he can kick the deer up for you! laughing6 laughing6 :laughing6:DIRTBALL2 bs
