Sam Sura accounted for more than half of South St. Paul's offense Saturday, rushing for 164 yards and a touchdown to lead the Packers past Hill-Murray 16-7 in a matchup of unbeaten Classic Suburban Conference teams at Higgins Memorial Field in Maplewood.
South St. Paul (4-0, 3-0) had 268 total yards but was held to its lowest point total of the season. In fact, it was the
Packers' first game with fewer than 35 points.
"It makes us realize we can't score a bunch of points every game, and we just have to keep on working harder at practice every week," Sura said.
Sura carried 39 times. He has 504 yards rushing this season, an average of 126 per game.
Sura scored on a 7-yard run in the first quarter, and quarterback Harrison Rund added a 2-yard TD run in the second quarter as South St. Paul took a 14-0 halftime lead.
"It feels great," Sura said of the win. "But it wasn't just me. We have Harrison with different (plays he runs), and our whole line does a fantastic job. It's a team effort."
The Packers' defense contributed with four interceptions of Hill-Murray quarterback Zach LaValle, who has thrown eight touchdown passes this season. LaValle also was caught in his own end zone for a safety as time ran out.
South St. Paul gave up its first points of the season in the third quarter, with LaValle hitting Shane Finnegan with a 33-yard touchdown pass.
Hill-Murray (3-1, 2-1) finished with 225 yards offense.
