Well they swamp froze over today and assuming it doen't warm up dramatically I will have my minnow traps out by monday.  Anyone want some free minnows?

I get anything from the smallest crappie minnow up to 4 inch fatheads.  also get a mud minnow on occation but never many of them maybe 30 a year and I stop trapping usually around christmas.  I can save them for you if your interested otherwise I just let them go.  I also get many sticklebacks, your welcome to them as well but normally I just kill them and feed them to my bullheads.

Must pick up at my house pm me and ill get you dirrections NYA, MN 8 miles west of waconia.

I do this just for fun and can't leagally sell them so I give them away.  I believe I can only have 60 dozen (12 dozen per fishing license) on hand.  I come very close so I need to get rid of them as fast as possible.

well once I get it out I can post pictures and show you

but I pretty much just tie a stick to a trap and drop in threw the ice.  No bait or anything just plain trap.  There are a few lakes/swamps in my area that hold minnows.  Id like to find a place where I can get shinners tho

BK What kind of a setup you have to keep the minnows? Can we see it?
I'm wondering if a stock tank with a heater in it would keep some of your minnows?

If you have it in your garage you don't need a heater. Cold water is good for them.

I setup 30 gallon trash can with a lid to keep minnows. It has an aquarium filter and a bubbler in it. I've kept minnows for weeks in it.

Yep. I use the 30 gallon for redtails during the summer. In the winter I have a 20 gallon aquarium I can setup in the house to keep them in. Or a 20 gallon rubbermaid works as well. If you have an aquarium filter it won't freeze. Moving water doesn't freeze.

I'm talking a tank 300 Gal for watering cattle,Its outside but has a water control to keep it full,it also has a recirculating elec. heater so the cattle can drink water instead of ice.I havent taken its temp but it has to be above 32 how much I dont know.........I will tomorrow.

Don't move fast enough. Look at a waterfall and how fast it's going. I can run my waterfall all winter in my backyard and it won't freeze at all. Minnihaha falls don't freeze either.

Waterfalls most certainly freeze.  I don't have access to any of my photos, but I have photographed several waterfalls along the north shore that were frozen over.  Those waterfalls are much bigger than Minnehaha falls.

Not to quibble Trent, but I was thinking the same thing.  Then I remembered, it is not the actual falls that freezes, but the spray from the water falling that freezes and creates the frozen waterfall effect.  Could be wrong though. dontknow dontknow dontknow

Correct Tom. Never had my fall in the back yard freeze and that's just a little one.

OK...Time to put on the science hat.  Standing water forms ice when temps reach 32 degrees.  This occurs because the water molecules are moving so slowly that they start to stick together.  When water is moving, 2 things happen.  The movement of the water itself prevents the molecules from sticking together and the movement also creates a bit of heat.  Eventually, if the temps get cold enough for a long enough period of time, water molecules will start to stick together and form ice.  Once the ice starts to form, the process speeds up.  The faster the water is moving, the colder the temps have to be to freeze the water.  All water, moving or not, can in fact freeze.

So back to the topic of minnow storage.  Moving water will indeed help to keep the water from freezing.  Even if they are kept in an unheated garage, they will likely not freeze if the water is kept moving because temps will likely not get cold enough in a garage to let the moving water freeze.

sounds good Wyatt pm me when and where you wanna meet up.

Wade-  I've had them for 3 weeks and haven't had a single minnow die yet.  I usually keep most of them alive until the end of januraryish then I think they start to starve (thats why I like to get rid of them as fast as possible).  I bought some gold fish food that im gonna feed them and see if it helps at all.

I have a 30 gal stock tank I keep in my laundry room with an areator from a fishtank.  I'd show pics but its too dark in there and they don't work very well.  I could show you if you came over  They still die but takes a little while.
