The snowmelt really ate up the edges around here. I went to the lake and tested a few "iffy" looking spots close to shore. I put my weight up on one leg and went through to my crotch.
I'm going to fuel up the boat, give it the spring once over, and go chase walleyes on the river!

No issues just south of Brainerd. Had 29 inches of ice. No issues at the landing, although we drove a 4 wheeler and a sled on the ice from his place. There were trucks on the lake, with much of the snow compacted down.

I was hiking yesterday and wandered across a few smaller lakes here in the metro. There is still snow solid on the edges of the lake. There is also 2-3" of standing water on the surface. I would venture to say the 45-50 degree temps and 4 straight days of rain will change that fairly quick. Next weekend my be the end of it for me.

Yeah looks like we might have 1-2 more safe weeks to hit the ice (with a car or truck) in my area. I would say that we have about a month depending on the weather to still hit the ice but I think in a week or two it will be four wheeler or foot travel only. I for one am not unhappy about this. I really can't wait for open water.

Ya Whisker watch that first step, it will test your pucker power.  Sunday it made my last trip for the ice season.  Plenty of slop over ice that was thick enough but the last two days it rainned and has a lot of water over the ice and still running in so its getting not safe in central iowa.  Boy what 1 week can make and as I fish alone mostly I'm not chancing it.

I guess some of the guys I have been hitting the lake with these last few weeks went out last night and broke through at the access coming off the lake. They were able to drive out and get off the ice but I guess its fourwheeler only now. I guess that 1-2 more weeks of safe ice is not the case here in my area like I figured it would be earlier this week.

Reports of 6 people through the ice south of me in the Omaha area this week. Luckily no tragedies as of yet.

Right now pouring rain, pea size hail, thunder and lightning. No more driving vehicles on the lakes in central Minnesota for me. Ice is going to go fast now as temps to be in the 50s after all this rain finally quits by the weekend. Time to get the boat out of storage.

Yep, Pouring rain right now. We sure have enough moisture in the Detroit Lakes area. With all the rain we had last fall under all the snow we had this winter, under all the rain we are getting in March, we are in for a sloppy spring. I guess its a good thing that all this rain isn't in the form of snow. What a mess that would be  BangHead. We Still wouldn't be able to get out on the lakes if this was all snow instead of rain. Flooding with the weight of the snow would be just as bad as the rain eating up the ice. SO, either way I guess our fishing wouldn't be very good..

But it should help bring some of the lake levels up. thumbsup thumbsup
There were many that were over a foot below normal levels last year.

yeah you know I noticed that to. I couldn't figure out why that is. I looked at the average rain fall and snow averages and they seem to be in check for our area last year. But still the lakes were lower then normal. Good point Tom.

That's interesting, because most of the lakes in the cities are still low. icon_scratch icon_scratch

We knew we would have extraordinary high levels this year,Probably hitting what the DNR calls Ordinary High Water Mark. It only hit this level once in my 11 years here and that was 2001 when we had the second or third higest snow measurement recorded for this area.

There has to be some kind of water flow that was closed to allow for higher water levels on your lake Sparce. I fished alot this past fall and I know the lakes I hit were alot lower then in previous years. somthing isn't adding up. Even after all the rain we had last fall the lakes were still low.  dontknow

Just the rain the lake has no inlets and only one small dam as the outlet which flowed all fall. The Mn river was up feet couldnt get to some of my catfish spots.
Just yesterday the Mn. river and the local rivers and streams around here were issued flood warnings for I think it said the next few weeks, cause the ground is saturated from last fall the rain and fast snow melt is causing some3 flooding now and its expected to pick up.

I drove over the MN today. It jumped up a great deal over night. All the ice that was along the shore has disappeared.
