OK I don't want to rant here but.....  We really need to do better as a group at cleaning up after ourselves. This spring melt has uncovered a few short months of mess and it really doesn't make us look good. Cant blame the pleasure boaters in the winter. The thing that bothers me is, We can see the mess that is made over a winters worth of fishing as soon as the snow melts and before the ice melts. Look at all the trash on the ice, then think about how much stuff is in our lakes from the summer months that just disappears to the bottom. It really makes me sick to think that Sportsmen do not take care of there playground better. Like I said I don't want to rant and during the summer I know theres others using the lakes but during the winter....... Its all ICEFISHING and nothing more.  I like to leave something cleaner and better then when I found it. You should to.

You can post this issue all you want.  Many people on all sites have posted it, the DNR has warned us.  Fines are given out, the pigs are chided, and still it goes on.  Disgusting.  All REAL sportspeople can do is to do the best we can to clean up after ourselves and others.

I agree with Tom. It's not a lot of us that are doing the trash. Heck when I hit the ice, I take more with me than when I got there most of the time.

You are wrong thought that it's only ice fisherman that use the ice. I see tons of snowmobiles on the ice all year. Not to mention others who use it for recreation. There's ice boats, four wheelers and others that are out there. I would say a lot of it comes from ice fisherman but it's not just them.

It is sad and pathetic to see. If you see someone doing it call it in. If you see a mess pick it up. That's all you can really do.

Its not all ice fishing. Here in Rochester we have Foster Park/lake that is stocked with put&take trout. While the SE Asians take the brunt of the crap for litter left behind by shore anglers, its the Slavic imports who are the pigs. Bosnians and Ukranians specifically.

Its not unusual to see groups from the offending nations gather on certain parts of the shoreline and start fires while fishing into the evening. The next morning you can pick up a half ton of crap they leave behind after having their party only to find them back doing it again the next night.

This is MY country and, like religion, don't come here and thrust your garbage down my throat. Here again I think that before the foriegners hit our soil they should be required to speak English, write Engish, have a job lined up and be deportable for ANY infraction of American laws.....after they do 4 years of active duty in Uncle Sam's ARMY.

But the are plenty of suck holes who just don't care about leaving their trash on the ice or shores who were born here. Maybe a blanket party would help them understand the errors of their ways. Its really rude to watch people pull out of the local Mac and Dons and drive down to the park a couple blocks away, eat their grease burgers and toss the wrappers out the window when a garbage recepticle is ten feet away. It kind of makes a guy want to walk over and rail the dink.

While I do agree 100% I think there is a "ray of hope" I am 45 years old and I can honestly say I do believe it was much worse 20 years ago.  If I see someone doing it you can be pretty sure I'll pursuade them to pick it up.

I don't think so Sandmannd. I think I'm dead on on this one and I'll Kiss your a$$ if you see an Ice boat out on the lakes in my area that I'm talking about  laughing4 laughing4 laughing4.Of course now I can see you dragging out the ice boat just to prove a point laughing4 laughing4 No I'm not wrong. I've snowmobiled for going on 22 years now and I have NEVER hit the local lake to just do a little pleasure riding. I'm sorry but its Icefishermen that are leaving this mess. And everyone knows it. Snowmobilers don't leave minnow bags, wood blocks, jig and hook packaging, beer and pop cans right next to where a portable or perm house was set up, as well as 1 pound LP gas containers and fishing line. I've NEVER stopped on a lake to have a snickers bar while lighting my lantern and re-spooling my fishing line on a snowmobile. Like I said I'm NOT wrong. It might be the case on some of the lakes in the cities but not up here. I know who is leaving the mess. That was the point of my post, Denial in a lot of people who icefish.

Your first point Tom kind of proves mine. These guys are Icefishing/Fishing no matter where there from originally. You do make a good point on your second about the Big Mac wrappers and I agree totally. But still in my area its a very small number of folks who just head to the lake to eat a Burger then leave. Once again its the icefishing that leaves the mess. I'm sorry, say what you want but for every one finger pointed out to the next guy theres usually three pointed back at yourself. And that includes me. I'm just saying that we REALLY need to make sure we bring in as much if not more then we bring out.

Yep, I couldn't agree more Tom. Like you said, All that REAL sportspeople can do is clean up after ourselves and others. Its just a point I was trying to drive home as after my last outing it is obvious that it needs to be.

Whats the most upsetting is that these slobs are giving the respectful sportsmen a bad rap.
Its really sad to see what certain ethincticitys are doing to our environment. We can do everything short of slapping them beside the head for a wakeup call but that would only get us in trouble because of some harassment law or some other law that protects these slobs. We can call the local authoritys and report them but it continues. And if we turn our heads to this problem --they win and thats the last thing any sportsmen and women want.
So what as legal respectful sportsmen can we do to stop this abuse to our woods and waters??--Something has to change.
I could go on about this for I have seen a certain river area being abused by these slobs.
On the ice I have picked up after a few of theses slobs.. If I see this occuring I will write down the license plate # or the MN DNR # from the shack and report it to the proper authoritys.

I wouldn't say it's just other Ethnic groups, I've seen plenty of slobs from all walks of life. Best you can do is call it in when you see it. If you can get a pic of them that's even better.

A classic example of us doing our own damage, is at a GTG, the request was made that only gas grills be used.  One character brought charcoal and then dumped it on the lake.  He as chastised, shrugged it off, and others had to clean up the mess. cussing

Go to Anchorage and pick up a few....I don't know.  Maybe getting it legislated or since the hwy dept isn't going to put up anymore deer crossing signs, they could put these up at every landing.
I shore fish on Vadnais, and the whole shore line is nothing but butts.....several tried one evening to pick them all up, got it fairly clean, and within a week, you wouldn't have known about it.
I wonder when the COs are checking for limits or licences how they handle the cigarette butts.  I know they  give out fines for littering, but I wonder how bad it has to be before they do it.

The courts are full of heaver cases,The cost of court is more than the ticket, even with court costs added.
I'b bet a co wouldnt want to sit in court for days out of the month for minor tickets. How do you fix it? Just like canada PASS OUT TICKETS large sum tickets. We here will start to complain about taxes and where the money is spent. How can the costs be reduced!
So which route do you take?
If you try to be eco friendly You'll get (I saw this on another site) something like a comment on the pipeline that was 86ed till a route around permiable sands was in place. He said Nebraska has no worth while land to save.

Litter is unsightly. It destroys the natural beauty of Minnesota’s roadsides.
Litter is expensive. Minnesota spends $5 million a year collecting litter – not counting what cities and counties spend.
Scenic and litter-free highways say “welcome” to visitors and help make us proud to be Minnesotans.

Litter Facts:
Adopt-a-Highway volunteers pick up litter on more than 12,000 miles of Minnesota roadways.

Adopt-a-Highway volunteers pick up approximately 26,000 tons of litter every year.

During a one-time sweep of Interstate 35W in Minneapolis, Adopt-a-Highway volunteers picked up 192 tons of trash in one day. The quantity filled 16 Mn/DOT tandem trucks and represented approximately 6,000 filled trash bags.

Researchers calculate that 55% of all littering is done intentionally by people who drop or discard products.

45% of roadside litter occurs unintentionally when trash blows out of uncovered trucks or falls off unsecured loads.

Experts estimate that approximately 80% of all littering is done by males.

Food and beverage packaging constitutes 51% of roadside litter.

A conviction for littering is a misdemeanor that is entered on the offender's driving record. A second offense requires a minimum fine of $400 and a maximum of $700. A judge may require the offender to pick up litter along public roads or impose a jail sentence. (Minn. Statutes 169.42 subp. 5)

Mn/DOT can bill an individual for retrieving and disposing of illegally dumped items like tires, appliances, furniture and hazardous waste.

Adopt-a-Highway volunteers save Mn/DOT $5 million every year.

Tipping fees imposed by landfills cost Mn/DOT approximately $250,000 every year.

This is what I found for the roads....I wonder what it is for lakes.  I know they do hand them out.  Especially for removal of ice houses.

I see washers old heaters, H2o Heaters in ditches all the time,3/4 mile up the road is a favorite spot every spring its a couple large  items with bags and junk!!!!
Gimme a pistoleo and badge I'll write the tickets! as long as I also receive a executioners hood and license for beheading
