i have a new found respect for plastics. i got out on the lake today for about half an hour today, when i relised that i forgot to stop at the bait shop. i looked in my tackle box and found a bag of little atoms nuggies. i thought i might as well try them so i punched out my buddys holes from yesturday and fished for half an hour and ended up with 6 crappies and 2 gills. i couldnt believe how great these plastics work but i am a fan!!!!!!

I have gotten to the point where plastics are my go to. I still take spikes out with me but use only if I can't get anything going on plastics.

yeah i had a guy come over to ask what i was using becaue he said he was their for like 2 hours and caught like 4 fish. i told him what i was using but i think it was the fact that he was fishing with bobbers and the crappies were bitting upwards.

Plastics are now a must have on the ice. I have found that when the perch start chewing you can up size your perch by switch from live bait to plastics. You wont catch as many but I'll take 40 big ones over over 50 tiny ones.

You could upsize your profile too, wether it be with a larger jig or packing on a bunch of meat.

i know what you are saying Queico i had 8 fish and i only used one piece of plastic. if i would be using live bait i probably would have went trough 15 wax worms. plastics can be alot cheaper option than spending money on live bait every time you hit the ice!!!!!

I fell in love with plastics last winter.  Well, at least on a couple of trips.  They didn't seen to work too well for me on WBL, but it might have been because I was new to using them.

I think that plastics have their time and place.  When ice fishing, I've always had better luck with live bait than with the plastics, even though I have caught a few on them.

I love them in the spring for crappies up shallow.

The only live bait I buy any more is minnows. I usually run tip ups while jigging for panfish. So all my panfish rods have plastics on them. I am able to just fix my knot and drop it back down the hole after catching a fish. I dont need to rebait after every fish.

Anybody? What would you say your confidence plastics are? I have a lot of plastics but I think I need to learn how to fish them better as I always end up back to a bobber and a minnow. I think the next trip out I am going to make it my goal to try and catch some fish on plastics alone and see what happens. :)

i wouldnt try to fish plastics solo. i would always have a back up plan. plastics are hit or miss. they work very well with active fish and i found they will not work with neutral or less agressive fish. my go to plastic is a little atom nuggie. i usualy rip of the ball at the end and just fish with the tail. i think crappie tom savwell has a video out on it i will see if i can find it.

Yeah I always bring 1 thing of euro's and a small scoop of crappie minnows just in case but I spent a bunch of money on plastics and hardly ever used them. So I was trying to challenge myself to use them more. LOL

I haven't used those. I prefer the Cube's Plastics we sell through UMO. The J&S plastics aren't bad either.

My go to are the Cubez Quivertail. I generally have Motoroil, Red and Glow with me. Those are the top three colors when I'm out. Glow is great in stained water.

Chad,
Your best bet is to go buy a handful or two of different styles and colors. Just because one color or style works for someone on one lake doesn't mean that's what the fish want on a different lake. Their are so many variables that affect what a fish wants it's mind boggling.

Trav is spot on with that. Those are generally my "go to" but I carry a pretty big variety of plastics with me. You just never know what they are going to want.

Chad, I should be home tonight and tomorrow doing scads of homework. I know you don't live to far. If you want to stop over and check them out I could probably get you a sample of a few different ones to see what you like from Cubez.

I would love that! However tonight is date night with the wife and if I miss it she will kill me. Are you going to be around the rest of the weekend? Or out on the ice? LOL
