LAKE OF THE WOODS ORIGINAL WEEKLY FISHING REPORT FEBRUARY 12th, 2012

We continue to move houses to stay on fish.  The bite slowed a little with the cold snap prior to the weekend.  Things started to pick up again on Saturday and Sunday as warmer, more consistent weather moved in.  Our houses are scattered across the lake.  We have been having success in 28 feet, closer to Pine Island, as well as the deeper water 12 miles north of the island.  Gold jigs tipped with a minnow and glow red are the colors of choice for most anglers.

Ice conditions are good with over 30 inches of ice.  Weather looks like it is stabilizing this week.  Highs in the upper 20s and lows in the teens should make for improved fishing.

We do have a few midweek openings available for the upcoming week.  Give us a call!

LAKE OF THE WOODS ORIGINAL WEEKLY FISHING REPORT FEBRUARY 19th, 2012

Most groups are currently catching a mix of walleye and sauger.  Fish seem to be spread out, not concentrated in schools.  Still finding some fish suspended, but most are on the bottom.  The fish are definitely there.  The trick is to get them to bite.  Trying different presentations and varying jigging techniques has been successful.

We had some northern fishermen in four-mile bay.  They caught several nice fish with the biggest being 36 inches, caught on a sucker minnow.  Northern fishing should only get better as we head towards spring.

We have some snow in the forecast for this week with colder weather moving in for the weekend.  We still have some midweek openings for next week.  Come on up!

LAKE OF THE WOODS ORIGINAL WEEKLY FISHING REPORT FEBRUARY 26th, 2012

Anglers have definitely had to work for their fish this week, but work and patience are paying off for most.  Some really nice walleyes have been brought in this week and quite a few slot fish have been released.  While the action has not necessarily been “fast and furious”, the majority end up with a nice mixed basket at the end of the day.  Most fish remain on the bottom, but nice, suspended walleyes are being caught.  Aggressive jigging is working at times, while a slower presentations work better at other times.  Keep trying different things as the fish seem to react differently throughout the day.

The Northern bite slowed some this week.  Perhaps a little early yet, but I would expect it to pick up soon.

As I type, a low front is moving in and bringing some white stuff.  Looks like a chance of snow throughout the week with temperatures near the norm.

LAKE OF THE WOODS ORIGINAL WEEKLY FISHING REPORT MARCH 4th, 2012

Fishing was good during the early part of the week, but slowed after the front moved through.  Lots of fish are being marked.  Varying presentations seems to help.  Jigging spoons or plugs can entice the fish into striking, if they are not feeding.  At times, the “dead” stick will work better, for the walleyes looking to get an easy meal.

Northern fishing has picked up in Four-mile bay.  A 41 inch pike was brought in this week and several 30+ inchers were released.  The next 2 to 3 weeks are prime time for the big pike to stage in the bay.  Guided pike trips are available.  Give us a call and we’ll literally “hook you up”!

It should be a great week of weather, with warmer temps on the way.  Hopefully, this will get the walleyes moving and stabilize the bite.

Look for us at the Minot, ND show this weekend.  Stop in and say “hi” if you are in the area.  It’s a great time to book a last minute ice fishing trip or your summer vacation!  Til next time…

LAKE OF THE WOODS ORIGINAL WEEKLY FISHING REPORT MARCH 18th, 2012

Wow, things happen quickly.  Last week we were talking about ice fishing.  Now we’re already rolling into spring fishing.  Record temperatures last week have the river open just east of Clementson.  With warm temperatures expected to continue, there is a good chance the river could be open to the mouth by the end of the week.

I talked to a couple groups yesterday. They said fishing was good and the walleyes were cooperating.  There was still some ice at the landings, but I would expect that to be cleared later this week.

We have been getting a lot of calls already from both walleye and sturgeon fishermen.  The last day of spring walleye fishing is April 15th.  The catch and release of sturgeon is year round, and the spring “keep” season is April 24th through May 7th.  Don’t miss out on some great spring fishing.  Cabin rates are just $29 per person per day.  Our bar and restaurant will be open, Call and book your trip today!

LAKE OF THE WOODS ORIGINAL WEEKLY FISHING REPORT MARCH 25th, 2012

It’s been a crazy week.  We went from ice fishing to open water in just a few days.  Lots of walleyes being caught this week near the mouth of the river and in Four-mile bay.  Quite a few big fish over 28 inches were mixed in with the eaters.  The fish look healthy with plenty of males in the 17 to 18 inch range.  The sturgeon bite is definitely on.
Many monster sturgeon are being caught and released.

Cooler weather has moved into the area.  Highs and the 40s and lows in the 20s will be the norm.  Remember, it’s still March.  It does look like a warm up is coming for next weekend.

We have midweek openings this week.  Spring rates are $29 per person per night.

LAKE OF THE WOODS ORIGINAL WEEKLY FISHING REPORT APRIL 22nd, 2012

Reports of big sturgeon are rolling in.  The biggest I’ve heard so far is 67”!  Lots of other fish in the high 50 and low 60 inch area have been caught and released.  Deeper seems to be better.  Forty plus feet at the mouth of the Rainy has been producing some monsters.  A gob of worms and a hook are all you need for bait.

Once again, for those of you who have never tried sturgeon fishing, the “keep” season begins on April 24th and runs through May 7th.  With the purchase of a $5 tag, anglers may keep one sturgeon between 45 and 50 inches.  Sturgeon are excellent smoked and there are no bones to deal with!  Catch and release has been going on for some time now and has been excellent.  Sturgeon lurk in the deeper waters in along the river channel.

Sounds like upper 60s and even a chance for 70s early in the week, but cooling down towards the weekend.  We have plenty of midweek openings.  Rate is still just $29 per person per night.  Come on up if you like catching big fish.  It’s a life experience you do not want to miss!

LAKE OF THE WOODS ORIGINAL WEEKLY FISHING REPORT, FEBRUARY 3rd, 2013

Fishing right now is all about being at the right place at the right time, with the right presentation.  Some groups have had excellent fishing, and it has been slower for others.  The groups that have had success all say the same thing.  Stay with it and be ready for a bite at anytime.  Walleyes have also started to suspend.  Electronics are a good idea.  Don’t give up on suspended fish, because you never know when the big one will decide to bite.  Gold and glow red jigs have been good.
Numbers have been a little better up near the reefs, but the bigger walleyes have been caught on the south end.

It looks like there will be a gradual warm up this week with highs in the 20s near week’s end.  There is a chance of snow in the middle of the week.

Hope everyone enjoys the Super Bowl.  It promises to be a great game!

The big walleyes are starting to bite.  Our houses are currently spread out over a large area ranging from 11 miles north of Pine Island up to Knight Island.  A combination of aggressive jigging and “dead sticking” has been doing the trick.  Glow red and gold continue to dominate, along with glass jigs and gem-n-eyes.  Live fatheads and frozen shiners seem to be working well.

We are bracing for a winter storm calling for snow and wind.  Things should settle down by Tuesday and as we head towards the weekend.

We still have some scattered openings through the end of February and the first part of March.  Give us a call and let us book your late ice trip!

LAKE OF THE WOODS ORIGINAL WEEKLY FISHING REPORT, APRIL 7th, 2013

It is that wonderful time of the year when open water and ice fishing meet.  Some groups are bringing their ATVs and their boats!

There is plenty of ice and snow still on the lake.  They are catching some nice walleyes in 15 to 18 feet outside of the gap and along pine.  This is primarily a morning and evening bite.

The river is now open near the Vidas landing where they are pushing boats across the ice.  Big boats are being launched at both Birchdale and Frontier landings.  They have been catching some big walleyes in the river.  It seems to be a matter of being at the right place at the right time.  Anglers have been using smaller jigs as there isn’t much current due to the slow melt.

We have had reports of some monster sturgeon being caught.  Should be a great sturgeon season coming up!

BORDER VIEW LODGE
LAKE OF THE WOODS ORIGINAL WEEKLY FISHING REPORT, APRIL 21st, 2013

Open water is FINALLY starting to hit the mouth of the Rainy River.  Quite a difference from last year!

The late winter appears to have pushed the sturgeon run back some.  Reports have been staggered with some groups doing very well and others just boating a few of the monsters.  As water temps begin to warm and the current picks up, the bite should pick up.

There were a few northern pike fishermen on the bay last week.  Pike fishing should be great once the bays and backwaters open and the fish get ready for spawn.

We will be posting river updates, as well as the public access status, on facebook this week.  We have midweek openings this week and next at just $34 per person per night.  Give us a call and catch your own river monster!

Sturgeon fishing is in full swing on the Rainy River!  The sturgeon bite is hitting its peak.  We have had quite a few reports of 60+ inch monsters being caught with excellent numbers too.   A gob of crawlers on a circle hook does the trick.  The current is picking up and should continue to strengthen as the melt continues.

We still have some openings for this week and next weekend.  $34 per person, per night, buys you an experience of a lifetime.  Take advantage of this great opportunity!

LAKE OF THE WOODS ORIGINAL WEEKLY FISHING REPORT, MAY 5th, 2013

As Sturgeon season winds down, we turn our attention towards the walleye opener.  While it looks like there will ice on the main lake, there should be plenty of great fishing in the Rainy River, Four Mile Bay, and in both the Lighthouse and Morris Point Gaps.  The cold spring and the late ice should mean the walleyes will be closer in, and not yet migrated to the deeper waters of the lake.

There is a chance for showers on Saturday with mostly sunny skies and temps in the 50s.  Not too bad considering the spring we’ve had.

We do have some midweek openings in May.  Take advantage of our May specials and get in on some early season walleye!

LAKE OF THE WOODS ORIGINAL WEEKLY FISHING REPORT, MAY 12th, 2013

Cold and windy was the story of the walleye opener.  Those that figured out that the bite was in shallow, were rewarded with a good day of “catch and release” fishing.  Reports of walleyes in the 20+ inch range were common.  Jigs and shiners, in 5 to 7 feet, produced well in the river.  Gold, glow, and chartreuse were the colors of choice.

It should be a great week for fishing as the weather warms up.  Highs in the 60s and even the 70s should make for enjoyable days on the water.

We still have some midweek openings in May.  Take advantage of our May specials and come on up!
