So, I really haven’t been active for awhile and some that know me will know why. Trying to balance school, work, and life at the same time can be a little overwhelming. With that being said, I haven’t had any time to get out and fish. It’s been rough accepting this fact, but what kept me sane this winter is knowing about a upcoming fishing trip that was pretty much mandatory. It’s an annual event that consists of some friends from high school that get together and stay at a resort in the Blackduck area. These trips are always a blast and my anticipation was high.

After arriving at our destination Thursday early evening, we unloaded the truck in -28 wind chills and reality set in. Some friends had been up there since the night before and the fishing report was awesome. Since it was dark, I decided to hold off on going out till morning.
After a night of beverages on Thursday, we all got up at 5:30 and started to proceed to a local lake. It was a very cold day but the winds were minimal so it was tolerable. I set my shack up in 22’ of water and began to mark fish immediately. They were very tight lipped up until 11:00 am. At that point, I couldn’t keep fish off of my hook. The crappies I pulled in were pigs! Most fish came in on a Lindy Fatboy in white tipped with a black quivertail. I also had a few come in for a green gill pill tipped with the black quivertail. If I were to pick one out of the 2, it would have been the fatboy setup. I ended up keeping a portion of my catch with 13 bullgills and 9 monster crappies to contribute to our fish fry.

On Saturday, we ventured off to another local lake and the results were slightly different. 20’ of water is where I set up. Marked fish right off the bat but they were very tight-lipped. The fish that were manipulated to bite were of high quality. As I looked down my hole, seen a 40”+ musky swim literally inches below the ice. As you can imagine, the panfish scattered and my flasher didn’t mark anything. It was slightly warmer but the winds reversed the warmer temps.

Sunday morning came quick and it was time to load up, clean the cabin, and head home. I was pretty disappointed with this fact. All in all it was a great trip. I really would like to get back up there before the end of the season.

You got into some great fish up there Jeff. Thanks  for an excellent report. I love the Blackduck area, just don't get up there very often.
