sad10 I Just found out, I will be PCSing to up state New York around the beginning of the year for at least the next 2 years. I'm sad that out of three years in Alaska, I only was able to do a few things that I wanted to do while I was here. But I guess I will have all the time in the world to do them when I retire.
If anybody has any Info about hunting and fishing in New York I would greatly appreciate it.

It's no Alaska that's for sure. I do know there is decent hunting and fishing up there from reading. Good luck to you, I'm sure you'll find plenty to do.

A friend of mine does tons of outdoors stuff around Ithaca so I will talk to her. She's a vet med student so not sure if she will be able to direct you where to kill animals.

I am hoping things will be a little more relaxed there. I am tired of being away from home. Hopefully the weather won't be too bad when I leave. I am Planning to drive so that should be interesting, In the middle of winter.

Doesn't sound like it will be a fun drive. Depends on if the weather holds for your trip or not.

What base will you be stationed at? There are some good hunting/fishing areas up there, I've been told. My brother was an instructor at West Point for a couple of years, so we drove out to see them. Went from Niagara to West Point through some areas with lots of bear, and nice looking lakes.

Good luck on your move!

You are probably going to be somewhere near the Finger Lakes area. Don't know diddly about the fishing there but it is beautiful country. Lot's of grape's grown around there and a number of winery's for all those grape's. You are probly not going to be too far away from Lake Erie. Fantastic walleye fishing to be had there. Also trophy size smallie's. Have a ball and good luck! :sunny:DIRTBALL2 bs

I start driving out of here next week. I am sorta excited but also sad. I am going to miss this place. I have decided to take the ferry from Haines, AK to WA so I don't have to drive across canada during the winter.

Good luck to you. I have a cousin at Eielson AFB and he loves it up there. He is getting out in June after 23 years. He was in Minot, then Whitman AFB and then Alaska so he had some very good hunting opportunities.

So, I finally found a house here and just about settled in. I got a house in the Village of Herrings, near Carthage NY. It's different here, that's for sure. LOTS OF TURKEY! LOTS OF DEER! Everyday, I see turkey and deer.
I'm not liking the Army up here at all. Just from what I have experienced in the month that I have been here, I am not reenlisting. I am going to ETS next August and move back to Alaska. I would rather be a greeter at Walmart in Alaska, than being treated like I'm 5 by people who are 5-10 years younger than me, and all they know is the Army. There is other things in life other than the Army. I don't care what they think, My family comes before the Army, and I get told I have the wrong attitude if I think that way. I'm Done with The Army! protest

Welcome back. Sorry to hear it's not going well for you out there. I would agree that your family and happiness is the most important thing there is. Weigh it out and do what's best for you all.

I was thinking if he was close, he could join the National Guard to finish out for retirement, but it is all up to him.  He may have made some connections in Alaska.  Either way, I wish him the best of luck.

Right now I'm a little over 6 years in, when I ETS I will be 7 1/2 years in. I am just tired of being away from my family. Watching my kids cry and beg me to stay everytime I get sent somewhere. Also having them tell me they don't want me to die. It breaks my heart.
I am being told, the way I am being treated is how the big Army works. If thats how they work, I don't want to be a part of it. My job is stressful enough before you throw in unneccesary stupidity.
National Guard is a option I was looking at. I am going to try to get on with the Fairbanks or North Pole Police. Then maybe transfer to the troopers and become a wildlife trooper.
