NEW YORK — May the force be in 3-D.

Lucasfilm announced today that the "Star Wars" films will be converted into 3-D and rereleased theatrically. All six films of the saga, beginning with episode one, "The Phantom Menace," and concluding with episode six, "Return of the Jedi," are expected to be released in theaters in 2012.

Lucasfilm and distributor Twentieth Century Fox have not yet set a release date. Industrial Light & Magic is supervising the conversion process, which it promises will be "cutting edge." Many previous conversions of films shot in 2-D, such as "Clash of the Titans," have drawn criticism for cheapening 3-D.

John Knoll, visual effects supervisor for Industrial Light & Magic, said a proper conversion to 3-D "is a matter of taking the time and getting it right."

Never saw them in 2-D...have absolutely no interest in watching them or Lord of the Rings in any kind of extra dimension. Don't find them interesting at all.. puke BangHead

I am sure there are Star Wars fanatics out there that will jump all over this.  I have watched all 6 episodes and find the final 3 films (first ones made) boring.  I know they were pretty high tech back in their day, but I can't see how 3D is going to make up for a lack of technology at the time of filming.  Now if they were to completely re film the series with modern technology...that might just rock!  Picture Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader in a light saber fight with Matrix style filming.

I'm a crazy and all over it!! Loved the original three movies. I've watched them all so many times you can't count. Loved when they digitally remastered them as well and went to them all again. I'll be going to see them all in 3D as well. Classic films that are awesome!!
