It follows the tree line.

It is 14 inches across in most places and about 2 feet deep.

It is loaded with neon colored brook trout.

Can you see them?

Why does your guys trout season close?  Iowas is open year round....is it because you guys have a natural trout population and ours is stocked?

we have lots of natural reproduction here and the season is closed to aid in the breeding cycle of the trout.
i think it is closed 2 months too early and should extend until the end of november.

What Len said.  I too believe that the closed seasons are too restrictive here in MN as well.  Trout don't need 6 months for the breeding cycle.  Some Iowa streams have good natural reproduction.  In fact, there are some Iowa streams I fish that I believe are better than all the Minnesota streams I have fished.  Different state DNR's just have differing philosophies as it pertains to seasons.

Driftwood

I know there are a few Iowa streams that have natural reproduction....Like Waterloo creek (my fave to be honest) in Allamakee Country.  Most the ones I have been to, the high reproduction areas are catch n release only with artificial baits only like south of HWY 76 outside Dorchester.  But they natural trout do move up and down the streams so there is a good chance to catch them anywhere along that stream.

Have done really well there.

caught 2 browns 2 years ago that rivaled anything I caught in Wisconsin.

This year i caught an absolute monster.  Was a put and take area that I typically only catch small bows and a few skinny browns.

The massive brown came out from under a rock and just pounded it.  I could see blood from the second of hook up. It didn't make it.

Not going to put photo up....don't want to be given a hard time.

Len I dont think you'll get a hard time here! Things like that happen. And I'd like to have a looksee!
How bout a area NE Iowa cant recall the name its a state park I believe? with a stream, a noted stream I think and if I remember its within 50-80 miles of the Mn boarder.I was told of it and we may be making a trip just to trout fish and see the area.No map right now but if someone here cant get the Place/name I'll look it up it is marked on my travel fishing map.

No worries with the photo Len.  We understand that sometimes fish don't make it.  If you feel comfortable posting it...go for it.

Just because an area or stream is put and take, doesn't mean there is no natural reproduction.  Like Len, I have caught some healthy larger trout in these areas.  Waterloo Creek is a good area.  I fish that from time to time.

Feel free to post it Len. Though most sportsman like to see big ones swim away, things happen. If it wasn't gonna make it there is nothing wrong with taking it for the table. I never understood those that bash folks for keeping fish. I catch and release but keep my share for the table as well.

Put it up, I'd love to see it.

I have not fished the Postville area.  All of my Iowa fishing has been from Decorah to the north.  I live about 70 miles north of there, so I can't comment on the fishing in that area.

Sparcebag are you talking about Yellow River Forest Preserve?  Thats another good spot to fish when its not inundated with people

These are the streams in Iowa i frequent

Waterloo
Paint - also hit the YRFP side of this on occasion
North & South Bear
Sny Magill
Big & Little Mill -- they are about a 45 min drive from the house and cant always make the 2.5hr drive up farther north
Otter
Bloody Run

There are others that we make quick stops at just to throw a couple spinners and see what happens.  I have also fished a few Put N Grow streams with good success

One of these days I will learn how to use my fly-rod....for now the only thing I catch with it are trees, shrubs, myself and innocents bystanders....

I will say however at twilight while camping at Paint Creek one night i made a valiant effort to try and catch a bat with my flyrod as it seemed I had better luck whipping it around in the air thna actually fishing with it.....could have been the next sporting craze

take out that walleye rod and reel and put a size 6 panther martin on it.
Works better in tight quarters.

This is a corner that holds the minimum of 5 big browns.

It is one of my first stops opening weekend.

Does the possibility of a 25 inch brown in this bend make you smile?

I believe in responsible harvest...Not blind c/r

I have seen many of the same looks.   My buddy Joe Chadwick

was threatened once because he kept his three trout limit.

There is stream called Castle Rock in Grant County and the DNR

dumps the worn out brooders in there.  There is section in the middle

of it this area that anything goes. The rest is c/r artifical only.

My buddy Joe thumped some dumb brooders.

Again I am bashful to post the photo.  Don't want to be dissed.

Catch and release is a management tool not a religion.
