Win A Pound Of Leeches For Opener!!

We are very proud to announce a new contest this year. We are working with Jewell Outdoors to bring you a FREE POUND OF LEECHES for Walleye Opener!!

To qualify for this prize, we are looking for some great fishing stories. Post your stories here and we will choose a winner from them on May 8th, right after Fish Fair. So give us your stories and good luck on winning some FREE BAIT!!

Jewell Outdoor Leeches

Our leeches come from the ponds and waters of northern, Minnesota - the most bountiful location of leeches in the world. More than 25 years of experience in live leech handling help us bring you clean, well cared for, lively, attention grabbing, fish snatching leeches.

Jewell Leeches are pre-sorted, and are sold in 3 pound minimum orders. Click here for orders under 3 pounds. We have leeches available in four sizes - Jumbo, Large, Medium, and Small This year, we're also offering a special package - ?Recession Leeches.' They're a little bit cheaper than the large leeches, but you'll get a mix of all different sizes. Great for a weekend at the cabin with the family!

We understand that you may not need the entirety of a three pound minimum order. However, in the past, many people have gathered their friends together to share the leeches and the cost. We're all about building community around the sport of fishing! In order to bring you the most cost effective purchase we recommend the minimum three pound order - you'll save money for yourself - and your friends!

How many leeches are in a pound?

This depends on the environment, and changes from year to year. However, Jewell leeches are usually in the ball park of:

Jumbos: Approxmiately 10 1/2 Dozen
Large: 13-15 Dozen
Mediums: 16-18 Dozen
Smalls: 19-22 Dozen

Leeches are typically available from late April through mid to late July depending on the weather. Click here to proceed to the store.

With a minimum order of three pounds, your shipping is included in the cost!

Leeches are typically available from late April through mid to late July depending on the weather. Click here to proceed to the store.

Want to ‘Pre-Order’ for later in the summer? Please fill out our pre-order form!

Shipping Information

Your Live Bait will be shipped via Spee Dee Delivery or UPS, depending upon where you live. Instructions for live bait care will be included.

You must provided a physical address. UPS or SpeeDee Delivery do not deliver to P.O. boxes, street corners, or boat docks (unfortunately).

Leeches and Night Crawlers are shipped Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday each week throughout the season. Orders placed online Wednesday through Sunday will be shipped on Monday. Orders received Monday and Tuesday will be shipped on either Tuesday or Wednesday. Depending upon your geographic location most orders will be received within two days of shipping.
*Customers in Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, eastern North Dakota, eastern South Dakota, and eastern Nebraska, will receive their bait via SpeeDee Delivery on next day service.

When your bait arrives, it will be packaged inside a cooler which is placed inside a cardboard box.

Your leeches will be inside a plastic bag with plenty of oxygen and enough water for a 2 day shipment. We also include an ice bottle to make the bait extra comfortable.

Once the bait arrives, it will be your responsibility to place it in your own container. If you’ve been using leeches for some time, you’ll know what to do. However, here are some tips and tricks to help you out - just in case. Additionally, your shipment will include a small sheet of paper including live bait care instructions.

    - Leeches should be removed from their shipping container and placed in a live bait bucket of your   choosing. You’ll need to place them in fresh water.
    - Be sure the water is chlorine and fluoride free.
    - Check the temperature of the leeches, be sure not to shock them by placing them in water that is TOO COLD. Drastic temperature changes are hard on leeches. You’ll want to gradually lower the temperature to ensure liveliness.

Rules For Contest

1.   PARTICIPATION AND ELIGIBILITY. Participation is open to anyone 18 years of age or older in Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky & Missouri . You must be a member of Upper Midwest Outdoors to enter the challenges.

2.   RULE CHANGES. Rules interpretation is exclusively left to the UMO Administrators. The decisions of the UMO Administrators are final in all matters and are not subject to appeal.

My story isn't about catching fish, it is a continuance of pitfalls my son-in-law and I have when it comes to fishing together....
We were just north of Harris MN on Interstate 35 when we heard a thump, thump.  As we slowed down to find out what happened, the boat and trailer went whizzing by us.  When we got to the shoulder and looked, the chains and tongue were still on the ball.
The hitch had been welded on a home-made trailer.  How there wasn't any traffic at the time and how the boat just slid into the ditch without flipping is beyond me.  Now to find some place to get a new hitch and something to attach it with in that area.  And then putting it together in the median of the freeway.  That is just one of the many stories we have.  Got it done though and went trout fishing the next morning in Crosby with only one other incident.  He left his wallet 45 miles away at the camper.

Sorry folks, my staff brought to my attention that not all of the states have an opener and not all are on the same date. I knew that, just spaced it for this contest. This is good for anyone in all the states listed that Jewell ships to.

I also changed it so it's not just "opener" stories to qualify. Again, not all of you have openers and we want this open to all members.

So please, share your stores and win some bait!!

ok, heres my go at the free bait, not anything humorous, but. opener couple years back went out to the usual, norway lake kandyohi county along with about 150 other boats. we where with about 5 boats of friends. got there early enough that we didnt need to park a mile away even. so sue and i are fishing after a nord or 2 and a sheephead or 2 we floated across a little hump about 8 ft that dropped to 10-11 ft. hooked into a nice eye. so we managed to stay on top of this little area even with all the other boats around. after some time we eventually had 9 nice walleyes,  musta been the motormans exceptinal motor control abilities  occasion14 :occasion14:while others real close didnt do to well. we decided 9 was good enough and called it quits. got to the dock and theres this guy with a camera,i figured out it may be a reporter, so i go get the truck and when i get back my wife is standing by the sign gettin her picture taken. few days later its front page news in the local willmar paper, hence my wife being a fishin celebrity. there where 4-5 other pics with hers and she was the only gal seen. only thing i/we can figure we can guess our success was to the fact we used shiners for bait and used home made lindy style rigs that where much longer than the ones you buy in a store.

Minnesota Walleye opener has always been a family type get together for us. back when we were younger Dad would put the Grizzly camper in the back end of the ford pick up and hitch the boat to it. We would go up to a family friends house that was in sunset bay. Bud and Ole Foster I will never forget Bud he was always good to us kids and he was fun to be around.
All 6 of us kids would load into the back of that camper for a ride that seemed to take forever. We would pile up like a cord of wood on the top bed so that we could look out the window and watch where we were going. I bet it was a sight to see when we drove thru towns like Cambridge and Mora, Six kids ranging from 4 to 17 staring out that window. Once we took that Left hand turn off 65 we knew we would be able to get out and get some fresh air soon.
Once we pulled into the Fosters drive it was social hour for a bit than time to get the boat in the water, tents had to be put up for the elder kids than the camper needed to be leveled off.
I always remeber waking up in the morning and the air vent on the top of the camper was just loaded with mosquitos. Out the door we went to waste time on the dock catching those massive perch. Back in those days there was not a night time restriction on the lake so there was always some walleyes hanging on the old mans boat waiting to be cleaned. I think he took advantage of the night bite so us youngin could get out during the day.
When we did get to go out in the boat I remember us going to the point and fishing the rocks. funny how the point still holds fish on opener. The boats were piled up there no different than it is today. Corking with our big plastic bobbers hoping for yours to go down. We always cought fish.
I guess that is why still today we head for the pond on opener. Things are a bit different than they were than but tradition stand true. Mike my brother Luke my son and Myself look forward to the first eye to hit the net. We still to this day spend some time on the point. Weather it be as good as yesteryear or just a a short drive thru to see if the bite is on it still pulls the boat to her bouys.
I look forward to opener. A time to spend with my fishing buds and family and while wating for that tap tap feeling on the rod tip I will be thinking about the ones that got away in the past.
I hope our tradition of spending opener togther never ends cuz its always fun to be with mike and Luke on opener.

Two years ago my dad and I hit Big Stone Lake for the South Dakota/Minnesota border opener. After driving west through a huge snow storm and me freaking out that I was going to slide into the ditch with the boat we had finally arrived after five hours. It usually only takes two hours from my house. We ended up waiting out the storm in a dirty hotel room with no way to get around due to boat attached for two days. Finally we got on the lake Sunday because we didn't want to drive all the way home even though it was only ten above and wind howling out of the north. Years prior walleyes were jumping in the boat but this year they were not in our spot and didn't get a bite. We decided to leave at 3pm after my fingers went numb. When we were getting ready to leave our radio all of a sudden died. This was a brand new boat. I tired to start the boat and their was nothing, tired the trolling batteries they were too drained. So we started to troll the eight miles back to the landing going straight into the wind.   Guess what the batteries totally died after a hundred yards. We were lucky enough to get a boat via the paddle distress signal. A nice new boat with two fishing buddies gladly pulled us in and we offered money but they just said to do that for anyone that we see having trouble. We saw this the next week and helped a sailor in need. But that was the border fishing we experienced and when we did catch our limits of walleyes on the border lake we were using jumbo Leeches!!!!!   PS This was a true story!!!

The Collection..

My father and I were up ice fishing on Mille Lacs I believe 2 years ago. We were doing alright, caught a good amount of fat perch, a couple eelpout overnight, and even a nice walleye (Something we really have pretty terrible luck with, usually).

It was early-evening, so we were waiting on that "sundown prime-time" (Don't say "prime time" by the way, every time my Dad does we don't catch squat. It's a curse.) when one of our bobbers goes down. We slowly try to reel it in, but don't feel anything tugging back and decide to check the bait. Pulled up the line at the hook was gone. We figured maybe it's just a bigger fish or something with some teeth, although we never heard the drag go off like it usually does when a pike slams your bait. Okay, whatever, re-tie the hook, and keep fishing.

While doing so, another bobber goes down. Exact same thing happens. Tried to feel a fish, didn't, and pulled the line up to find a missing hook. Starting to get a little confused as to how this keeps happening.

Another bobber down. 3rd times the charm right? Right! We finally set the hook, but it feels like it's the smallest perch I've ever caught. While reeling it up I'm exclaiming "How could this fish possibly be taking our hooks if it's so small!?" - Whelp, turns out it wasn't a fish.

A crayfish had been going from line to line, cutting them, and collecting the hooks. Seriously. He had 3 chartreuse hooks in one of his claws, and my hook (also chartreuse) in the other.

Smartest crayfish I've ever seen, I swear.

Came home tonight from work and the Misses asked if I had ordered some live bait? I said no but I had won some. My box of leeches showed up today. Woohoo! Thanks Jewell and UMO with the price of gas these leeches will help with the expense.
Opened the box to find a bag of leeches, a "how to care for" instruction list. Thanks for the how to. I changed the water. After I ran to fleet farm and bought a leech locker. and put them in the fridge. Sat morning can not come soon enough.
Lets go fishing!!!!
Thanks

Never thought ordering live bait online would be a good idea, but with that quick of a turnaround to get them shipped to your door, I might have to reconsider!

Curious, was there any special packaging they used to ship them and keep them alive during the couple days in transit?

I already grabbed some leeches to prepare for the opener, but probably not enough! If I need some more, I think I'll be pretty confident that Jewell can provide!

Put those leeches to good use, Pat, because if you don't I'm gonna start saying that my story should've won ;)  laughing6

The leeches came within two days, they were packed in a box that had 1" styrofoam firmly in place on the inside. two bottles that I assume were frozen water and the leeches were in a bag similar to the ones you would get from the bait store for your minnows.
I bought a leech locker to store them in and with the care instructions I transfered them to the locker and placed them in the fridge. I changed the water today and they are all still alive, I have not found any the have died.
In my opinion jewell gave me a generous pound of leeches.
I don't think that you have to worry about them being used Joe I have plans for everyone of them and a long awaited walleye dinner is in order.
I will be on tonka the second weekend if your around we should hook up.
